How To Find Quality Log Furniture And A Trustworthy Retailer
Source: articleage.com
The great thing, garages, about, garages, looking for a retailer or manufacturer of
rustic log furniture, garages, is there are plenty of sellers out there
these days, especially with the age of the world wide web. Since
the birth of the internet everyone and there brother seem to
have tried to start making and selling all types of rustic
furniture, garages, online, but what I am sure, garages, that they found out is that
making log furniture the right, garages,, garages, way is a hard task to achieve.
Now don't take me the wrong way there are some great builders of
this style of furniture and you will notice they are the
craftsmen, garages, that have been around for a while. So knowing this let
me tell you how to make the right decision on choosing your
rustic furniture.
One of the first things you need to decide is the species of
wood you would like to go with, there are dozens of them out
there, but only a couple of good species that will stand up to
the elements outside. There is hickory, cypress , pine(not
recommended), aromatic cedar, eastern white cedar, Northern
white cedar etc. As for the species I mentioned I can tell a
little about each, hickory is a nice species but I noticed the
furniture I see made is that the diameter of the, garages, wood is always
small and I get a little suspicious of the strength of it.
Cypress, has, garages, hardly no grain that I see compared to the rest.
Pine is absolutely not for me, it is sappy and soft and it, garages,, garages, is
not very durable. Aromatic cedar is a beautiful wood but when it
weathers if turns dark in the elements untreated. Eastern white
cedar people will say it is the same as Northern white cedar,
but let me tell you its not, I know from working with it. The
wood is really knotty and hairy compared, garages, to Northern white
cedar. The looks are similar in color and the aging process is
the same. As for Northern white cedar it weathers to a beautiful
silvery, garages, gray if untreated and exposed to the elements. Northern
white cedar can with stand the elements for years, some say that
it, garages, will last for 50 years outside untreated, but I can tell you
by, garages, experience that it really only last for 20 years. White cedar
is not sappy at all, making it easier to stain or, garages, varnish unlike
other species, like pine that will actually have the sap come
out years later, right through the paint or varnish that was on
there.
Once you decided the species the next thing to do is find the
retailer out there selling the log furniture with that wood.
When you locate this seller, keep in mind that if that seller is
just a middleman, you will not get the service you will get from
the actual manufacturer. More than, garages, likely, if that person is not
the manufacturer, garages, and is just a website owner or guru, it is
probably just a drop ship situation and they will surely tell
you they can, garages, get you the furniture right away, when they have no
idea of the inventory or how busy the manufacturer really is
(don't be fooled with factory direct, sales pitches). Second,
just how much can that person really know about rustic log
furniture if they are just an order taker. Dealing with the
person who is actually handcrafting your furniture and can tell
you exactly when it, garages, will be done, is by far a more reliable way
to purchase your furniture. Trust me, there are more websites
out there selling log furniture then there are manufacturers of
it.
Now we can get to the construction of the log furniture. Some
log furniture is sanded, garages, smooth, some, garages, are skipped peeled,, garages, some
have the bark on and some are completely peeled. As for which
one is better, I can only tell you what I think. The sanded log
furniture definitely takes away from the rustic feel, skipped
peel, garages, is a, garages, nice, garages, look, but I wonder about the smoothness of, garages, the
wood with just a peel on parts of the log. The furniture with
the bark left on definitely has to have some sort of finish on
it to, garages, keep the bark on, and sometimes I have seen where the bark
will peel off over time. Completely peeled log furniture is
smooth, garages, with out splinters and can easily be treated and has, garages, the
true rustic look and feel, garages, . Getting past that you should then
take note of how the log furniture is actually connected
together. Some furniture is just butted up together and is
nailed, I do not recommend that style of construction, garages, . Most have
a mortise and tenon connection, which is extremely durable, garages, .
Things, garages, to watch, garages, out for with this is the, garages, size of the dowels,
some out there will go with a smaller diameter dowel meaning
their logs are usually smaller too. I recommend asking the
diameter and make sure it is at least 1.25", since that, garages, is the
weakest point of the furniture. The diameter of the logs should
be no less than 3" as far as I am concerned. Most of the rustic
log furniture I see on the internet does not meet that size on a
good percentage, garages, of there lines of furniture, even though it
looks, garages, large in the pictures I would definitely ask the sizes of
the logs to get a good comparison from one builder to the next, garages, .
The hardware that is used on the log furniture is a big factor
also, because if you are going to have your furniture exposed to
the, garages, rain and snow or what ever you don't, garages, want the hardware
starting to bleed or rust,, garages, all the hardware should be zinc
coated on all parts of the furniture. This is one of the many
ways that some of the manufacturers, garages, and garage builders cheapen
the quality of the furniture. Another thing to look for in the
hardware, garages, part, garages, of it is whether they nail or screw the furniture
together, screws are the better way to, garages, go than nails, but nails
that are hot dipped in glue are just as good as screws. The
nails without the glue coating will actually start to back out
over time due to the fibers of the wood pushing on them. If you
take a closer look at the pictures and ask some of these
questions you will get two things out, garages, of it, 1. You will find
the better quality log furniture and 2. You will find out, garages, if
that person who is selling you the furniture really truly knows
anything about rustic furniture. Other than construction or
species the only thing I can tell you about looking for a
quality piece of rustic furniture is that you should take a
closer look at the company you are dealing with. Building rustic
furniture is not like building a square table that can be pre
cut to length and then put together on an assembly line. Rustic
furniture needs plenty of design work, custom, garages, fitting, lots of
judgmental decisions being made do to the differences of the
sizes of stock, and craftsmanship that you do not get from the
builders that have 75 employees, there is now way, garages, that all the
employees have these kind of,, garages, garages, skills or, garages, patience or pride, they
are on an assembly line slapping the pieces together and getting
the furniture out the door to you, plus they have the big money
to market the product and get the exposure to be seen by the
public. Notice while your looking on the Internet or anywhere
else that, garages, there are plenty of sites or stores with the same
manufacturers, these are the big companies. Getting your rustic
furniture from a small company, garages, that has been in business for at
least 10 years and takes pride in every hand fitted piece, will
give you all the things you need to get a quality piece of
rustic furniture that will last for a long time to come.

Landscape Gardening
Source: articleage.com
Few people know how to improve their gardens. Many, garages, of us have grown so accustomed to the,, garages, garages, vertical rectangular beds of flowers and the quadrangle greenery zones, that we don't even get to think how to change that. Landscape gardening is the way to increase the natural look of your garden and turn it into something more beautiful and attractive. Many people would give a lot of money to achieve a better look of their gardens. But why spend a sum of fortune, when you can actually do it yourselves? Yes, yourselves. Landscape gardening can be done by almost everyone with basic carpentry skills. It is an easy procedure that virtually transfers, garages, your garden into architectural beauty.
What you need is some time off, and some cedar boards and screws. The idea came to me from a garden project magazine, where architecture of simple raised strawberry and herb gardens was presented. By that time I already had my rectangular flowerbeds in the backyard, and I was getting really tired of them. Suddenly, to my mind cropped up that raised gardens could be used not only for strawberry or herb growing. It could be used to enhance the landscape of my own commonplace garden! That was my first step in landscape gardening, garages, . My second one was that I ran to, garages, the garage and picked up my carpentry tools, which I was going to use for the construction.
How did the construction work take place? I used similar plans like those in, garages, the magazine for, garages,, garages, creating raised strawberry garden tiers. The difference, garages, was that I made three large squares out of the cedar boards size 1'' to 6''. The design was simple and the price of all was, garages, close to minimal. Remember that doing landscape gardening and creating a new design for you garden doesn't always include expensive operations and sophisticated skills. You just need to keep the enthusiasm, and that will certainly happen if carpentry is your passion. It happened to become mine and doing my design gave me great satisfaction.
My idea was to build some kind of, garages, a pyramid, by putting the largest square, 48 '' on a side, at the basis. The second square was 32'', garages, on a, garages, side, and was put over the soil of the first one, at a 90 angle to the, garages, one beneath it. The, garages, top square, size 21'' on a side, was put over the second one, turned at 90 angles to, garages, the one beneath it. It worked perfect and the result was overwhelming!
Afterwards I built, garages, two more sets with one and two levels, and my garden really became futuristic. The vertical, garages, levels gave a broader perspective of the garden, and wholly changed the landscape. The, garages, squares looked like diamonds, when they were turned at an angle. I composted the soil and replanted the potted perennials, which I had, garages, uprooted during construction work. The pyramid was located at the center of the, garages, garden, and that turned out to be the perfect place. With each tier having been turned at a different angle, different diamond, garages, shapes and multi-dimensional structure occurred. I created a number of triangular shapes as well. In winter, all the different shapes would make my garden more interesting. The cedar boards, garages, added to the woody atmosphere. After some time, they would acquire silver-gray color that would give some authenticity of the landscape. I put strategically orientated fieldstones, bricks and stepping-stones, so that, garages, a more naturalistic look was acquired. This way of landscape gardening not only changed the flatness of my garden by adding vertical dimensions, but, garages, it also created beautiful series of interesting patterns.
Of course, that was just an example. If you get involved with landscape gardening, you can find your own ways to make your garden more attractive. The important thing is to use your imagination. Landscape gardening doesn't require anything more than this. The expenses, garages, are negligibly small, and you don't need to be a professional carpenter to understand what it is all about

DONT WE ALL
Source: articleage.com
One evening I was leaning on the bonnet, garages, of a BMW car parked in
front of a fast, garages, food joint. I had just come out of this
particular one, my friends and I had gone to eat inside.I had
come out first and was waiting for them to join me so that we
could go back to home.It had been a very tiring day for me ,all
I wanted was to go, garages, home, take a shower and rest my back on the
softness, garages, of my bed. On impulse I turned to look over my
shoulder, coming my way from across the parking lot was what
society and I would consider a bum. From the looks of him, the
obvious was stated; he had no car, no home, no clean clothes,
and no money. There are times in a day when you feel generous
but, garages, there are other times when you just don't want, garages, to be
bothered. This was one of the "Don't want to be bothered" time
for me. "I hope he doesn't ask me for money," I whispered half
aloud to myself. And He didn't.Maybe he had heard, garages, me and maybe
not. He came and sat on the curb in front of the parking garage,
I looked at him closely, and from his appearance he didn't look
like someone who had money to even afford a bus ride to God
knows where he had come from. He kept starring at the car, his
eyes moving to and fro,, garages, like he was relishing the thought of
owning one. After a few minutes he finally spoke, garages, . "That's a very
nice car," he said. Although he was ragged, he had an air of
dignity woven around him. And this revelation startled me.
I said, "Thanks," and continued looking towards the door,
anxiously waiting for my friends to come out so that I could be
rid of him. He sat there quietly as if reading, garages, my thoughts and
waiting,, garages, garages, for me to ask him to go away, yet I, garages, remained silent,
waiting, garages, for the usually plea for money to come. The expected
plea never came.
As the silence between us widened something inside said, 'ask
him if he needs any help.' I was sure that he would say yes, but
I, garages,, garages, held true to the inner voice.
"Do you need any help?" I eventually, garages, asked him. He answered me
in three simple but profound words that I shall never forget.
Most times, we often look for wisdom in great men and women. We
expect it often from those of higher learning and
accomplishments. Today I was thought a lesson. A lesson I am
hoping someone, garages, else would learn too. I expected nothing but an
outstretched grimy hand, but it never came. Rather he spoke
three words that shook my body from my head to my toes.
"Don't we all?" he said. He inhaled deeply and continued. "I
need help. Maybe not for a bus fare or a place to sleep, but I
need help".Guilt slashed at my heart. I reached into my wallet
and gave him money not only enough for a bus fare but enough to
get a warm meal and, garages, shelter for the day. Those three little
words I stored somewhere deep inside my memory and today those
words still ring true. Living a fulfilled is not all about how
much you have or how much you have accomplished. Because no
matter how much you have, no, garages, matter how, garages, much you have
accomplished, you need, garages,, garages, help too. And also no matter how little
you have, no matter how loaded you are with problems, even
without money or a place to sleep,, garages,, garages, you can give, garages, help. Even if
it's just a compliment,, garages, you can give that.
You never know when you may, garages, see someone that appears to have it
all. They may just be waiting on you to, garages, give them what they
don't have, garages, . A different perspective on life, a glimpse at
something beautiful, a revelation of something wonderful, a
respite from certain daily chaos, that only you through a torn
world can see. Maybe the man that stood beside me for that
moment was just a homeless stranger wandering down the streets.
Maybe he was more, garages, than that. Maybe he was sent by a power that
is greatest and wisest to minister to a soul that has been or is
too comfortable, garages, in itself to notice other, garages, souls. Maybe God
looked down, called an Angel, dressed him like a bum, then said,
"Go minister to that man leaning on that car, for that man needs
help."
"Don't We All?"
How Safe Is Your Garage?
Source: articledashboard.com
Storing everything but the car, garages, in the garage is nothing new; however, since the garage door is often the largest entryway into the home, not only is a cluttered garage a safety concern, but it may be a security soft spot as well.
Keep it, garages, Clean: All the stuff that doesn't, garages, have a place in the house often finds its, garages, way to the garage, transforming it into a huge,, garages, unorganized closet. For seasonal items, install ceiling storage units to make the best use of space. For everyday items, like sports equipment, mesh nets and hooks keep items off the floor and easy to reach.
Chemical Clutter: Pesticides, automotive fluids, lighter fluid, paint thinner, antifreeze, garages, and turpentine should have child-resistant, garages, caps, be clearly labeled and stored in a locked cabinet out of reach of children.
Workshop 101: Use wall space to store tools securely in place so they will not accidentally tip or fall over. Store ladders sideways, not upright,, garages, so kids can't climb them and, garages, they won't tip over on children or vehicles.
Securing the Largest Door to the Home: A safe, garages,, garages, garage is a shut garage. Never leave the garage door open, and install a deadbolt lock on the door between the house and garage. Treat the garage door, garages, opener remote control like a key. Don't, garages, leave it in the car where it can be seen. Hide it in the console, glove box or under the car seat. According to the Chamberlain GarageTrends Survey, 32 percent of homeowners never lock the door between the garage and home. If an intruder has possession of the garage door opener or if the garage door is open, it's like leaving your front door wide open!, garages,
A Baby Monitor for the Garage Door: If nagging questions about unlocked doors keep you up at night, handy gadgets, garages, like the Garage Door Monitor from LiftMaster instantly provide peace of mind. The Garage Door Monitor, garages, will flash a red light when the garage door is open and can be placed anywhere inside the home,, garages, like on a nightstand, garages, .
Unlocking the Future: Using keys to enter your home is so last century, right? New products like the LiftMaster Fingerprint Keyless Entry allow you to open, garages, the garage door with secure fingerprint technology, eliminating the need to remember entry codes. The entry pad reads up to four unique fingerprints, is wireless and weatherproof and offers the most secure access control technology available for the home's largest entry point.
Seeing is Believing: "Photo eyes" or, garages, safety sensors have been required on all garage door openers since 1993. These sensors are connected to the bottom of the track system and reverse the door when an infrared beam is broken. Chamberlain recommends a monthly test of their Protector, garages, System, which automatically reverses the garage door if anything--including children or pets--interrupts the invisible beam.
Test the reverse function by placing a 2x4, laid flat, under the center of the garage door, garages, . When, garages, the door hits the wood, it should reverse and go back up. A safety reverse system is a must when it comes to keeping your family safe around a heavy garage door.

Acting as Your own General Contractor when Building your DreamHome
Source: articleage.com
This article, garages, is intended for the DIY (Do It Yourself) home
builder;, garages, however, it is very useful information for the new home
buyer, garages, to understand what processes you can monitor even if you
are not acting as the general contractor and hiring a general
contractor. For the, garages, inexperienced DIY home builder, acting as a
general contractor is one of the most stressful things anyone
can undertake. After, garages, that statement, you ask yourself "Why would
anyone really want to be the general contractor for their new
home?" Well the number one reason is to save money, and in our
society it's all about the money isn't it? It doesn't
necessarily mean that you are building the home (but with this
approach sweat equity has a whole new meaning), you are only
managing the sub-contractors. Successful general contactors are
either born, garages, , garages, good, or have been trained to be good. You, as your
own general contractor, do, garages, not have the time to be as good as a
contractor who makes their living building homes. For this
reason, I will give you some, garages, guidelines to help you out, garages, and feel
a bit more comfortable managing your new dream home as your own
general, garages, contractor:
Define, garages, Your Project; I have published an article on very
effective ways to decide on a dream home floor plan. I recommend
that you read, garages, that along with this article. The article is
called Home Floor Plan Designing for Your Future, garages,, garages, Home by Robert
Kempe. Once you have decided on the floor plan and all the
associated up front planning projects, such as finding the right
plot of land, gathering information on building codes and
permits, having signed construction drawings, etc. you have to
apply for the building permits. With the homework of gathering
all this information prior the application process and having
your construction drawings drawn to comply with city, county and
state codes this process is just a paper work issue. If you have
not properly done this entire process prior to the application,
this will slow your time frame down considerably. Most DYI
builders, garages, wait for the building permit application to find out
what is needed. Make it easier on yourself and do it first.
Execution, garages, of the Project; Now that you have a clearly defined
project, garages, you can get accurate quotes from the contractors. The
construction, garages, disciplines you will need are as follows:
Electricians, Plumbers, HVAC (Heating, garages, Ventilation Air
Conditioning),, garages, Framers, Concrete, Drywall,, garages, Finishers, Painters,
Roofers, Siding, Landscaping, Windows and Doors, Garage door.
Etc. Keep in mind that most contractors will have multiple
disciplines and will try to combine them as much as possible
either with their own work force or they may hire out
subcontractors as well. This is how you execute the project. Do
your homework on the contractors that you will want to work with
on your home. Ask people who you know that have recently built
homes who they have used as contractors. Actually any resource
on contractor, garages, evaluation is helpful. Have them evaluate the
experience. With this process you can then get three to five
contractor references from trusted resources without involving
any salesmen. Have a set of construction plans ready for each of
the, garages, contractors that you are going to have bid from the list you
have, garages, generated. Make sure that all the disciplines will be bid
upon.
Deciding who to hire as your subcontractors; You do not always
have to take the lowest bid!, garages, You want the contractor that is the
most qualified and most prepared to build your home. It is
highly suggested that each of the contractors break down the
categories and itemize how they arrived at their price. This is
best done by communicating this up front before receiving their
price, garages, . Once you have all this information, evaluate the prices
according to their breakdown. Rate, garages, the contractor on their
responses on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest rank. If
the bids are close then it's a matter of what contractor you
favor the most. If there is a large gap in the prices, you need
to determine why. This is where your breakdown of the work
performed, garages, and the associated prices can help you determine this, garages, .
This is also where you find out which, garages, contractors are the most
serious and most qualified and which contractors are easier to
work with. This might lead you to conclude that the best
contractor isn't always the lowest price. You get what you pay
for!
Managing the Subcontractors;, garages, You thought deciding who to hire as
your subcontractor was difficult, try managing them! This is
where most of the stress and "sweat equity" occurs. I have been
a construction project manager for 15+ years and honestly, every
time I am assigned a new project, garages, the fear of the unknown working
relationships with each of the subs is a major concern. I feel
your pain! To help you in your management, have a schedule ready
during the bidding war between, garages, contractors. Have this presented
at the time you present the construction drawings. In fact, have
three schedules! What this will generate is three different
prices from each contractor. Use this as part of your evaluation
as mentioned in the previous paragraph, garages,, garages, . Your long schedule,
medium schedule and short schedule will generate different
responses. You want this information, garages, up front so that when it
comes time to sign a contact with the subs, you can put in
clauses that if they do not hold the schedule there are
financial burdens placed on them. This will protect you from
mismanagement, garages, on their part. Typical content found in a
residential building contract,, garages, garages, can be found at the following link
http://www.b4ubuild.com/resources/contract/index, garages, .shtml
After all the schedules and contracts are agreed upon, you
become more than the customer, now you are the boss. Everyday
you need to communicate with the subs and get an updated
detailed report on what, where, when, how and why they are on or
off schedule. Manage the project by the schedule. Keep in mind
that the schedule will change if you decide to change your scope
of work by issuing change, garages, orders (example: changing the cupboard
or cabinet size, the flooring, or appliance). Keep in mind that
during this time, this is a small business and your profit is
represented, garages, by how close you come to your, garages, original agreed upon
costs associated with the schedule after the contract signing.
We could talk about management all day long. In fact, garages, there are
training courses,, garages, garages, on this subject that cost thousands, garages, of dollars.
Hopefully this bit of information will get you on the right
track and help make a smooth transition from concept to actually
building your dream home. Remember this rule of, garages, thumb, the more
you prepare, garages, the better you will be when handling the bumps in
the road. Gathering information prior to, garages, needing it will
actually save you more money, time and stress than you can
probably calculate.
If you find this information useful you should visit the site http://www.homedesign
floorplans.com/where you will find lots of interesting
articles related to this topic provided by Robert Kempe.
Forcing Bulbs For Indoor Winter Beauty
Source: ezinearticles.com
The long winter months can drag on to what seem forever. Will spring, garages, ever arrive? Why not bring a promise of spring into your home all winter long. You, garages, can have beautiful tulips, daffodils and hyacinths blooming in every room by forcing spring flowering bulbs.
Spring flowering bulbs need to go through a cooling period before they can bloom in the spring. Those potted daffodils, garages, and tulips you see at garden centers in March have been forced to bloom, garages, . They were put in some type of cooler to trick them into blooming just as if they had gone through a winter freeze.
You don't need to buy forced bulbs, garages, at the store, you can do it yourself and it is so easy! Just follow a few simple steps and you will have indoor beauty all through the long, cold winter.
You can use a clay or plastic pot, garages, . The bulbs really don't care which. Clay pots will dry out faster, so that is one thing to keep in mind. Clay pots need to be soaked in water for several hours before using to make sure all the pores, garages, are sealed. If you go with plastic, you can cover it with cute basket or wrap it in layers of tulle for a springtime look.
Select high quality bulbs from your local garden center or mail order bulb distributor, garages, . Make sure you select good size, firm bulbs. Don't get bulbs that are soft, shriveled or sprouting. The highest quality bulbs yield the, garages,,, garages, garages, most beautiful blossoms!
Bulbs need good moisture and proper drainage to grow. Make a soil, garages, mix of equal parts peat moss, potting, garages, soil, sand and vermiculite, garages, or perlite. I like to mix my soil in a big bucket, adding water as I mix to make sure everything blends well.
Get your pot and place pieces of broken crockery, garages, or Styrofoam (I like to break up a Styrofoam cooler). This will help with drainage. Fill the pot halfway with your soil mixture and place your bulbs pointed end up in the pot. The bulbs should be close together, but not touching, garages,, garages, . Bulbs like tulips that have a flat side should have the flat side facing the edge of the pot; the first leaves will make a beautiful green border around the flowers. You can now finish filling the pot with, garages, soil and water thoroughly.
Place your pots in a, garages, cool, dark place. You want to trick the bulbs into thinking they are in the ground. A root cellar, cold frame or garage works great. If you need to you can cover the pots with a black plastic,, garages, garages, garbage bag or boxes to keep it dark., garages, You can also put the bulbs in the fridge. Just make sure they are covered so it, garages, is always dark. The ideal temperature is 34 to 48 degrees Fahrenheit.
Early bulbs such as crocus and daffodils should stay in cold storage for about 12 weeks, with tulips taking about 16 weeks. You can then bring the pots inside and put them in indirect light, keeping them moist and feeding them weekly. Turn the pots once a day so the stems will grow straight
It is fascinating to watch the blossoms unfold, bringing color and beauty into, garages, your home. By forcing bulbs for indoor blooming you can bring a touch of springtime to the long cold winter.

Setting Up Home Multimedia Systems
Source: download
Integrated home systems may include all or any, garages, of the following:- , garages, Video sources to various rooms using display equipment from TFT, Plasma, Projection and PC connectivity, garages, . Audio distribution of CD based music, digital radio, digital TV broadcasts from terrestrial and satellite broadcasters, cable and increasingly over the internet, garages, . Data connections for the use of home networked computers, garages, access to the internet, garages, through broadband,, garages, ISDN and satellite Security control of cameras, recording devices and access control. Control, garages, of lighting, heating and other domestic services (cookers, washing machines and more)
The central core of any system is not the nature of the equipment used but how that equipment is connected to a central command and control centre. The cabling systems employed will determine whether future advances in technology are going to be available to the house owner without recourse to expensive re-wiring or installation of new control systems.
The first principle is to use a central hub and send a set of cables to each of the destinations, garages, - sending to a single destination and then looping or splicing to the next one brings into play a multitude of future problems of connectivity and reliability ; a single fault at any given point will affect everything further down that chain. A central hub ensures there is one point of reference for fault location and that each distribution point is not reliant on another's operation.
Video connectivity at a single point is often via scart, RF, DVi or similar connection. Using a central video source; be this DVD, satellite box or other video player, transmission via any of the above cables causes problems of bulk, cost and loss of signal over a long run. Video connectivity, when distributed throughout a single dwelling, is best served using high quality co-ax cable such as RG59/u runs as a composite signal, garages, . For the ultimate video connectivity, signals should be sent component (YUV) but this requires 3 cables to each point of use, garages, .
Data transmission for computer connectivity, garages, to the internet is best achieved using a Cat5e cable system, garages, back to a central router/hub, garages, . This enables all computers to share internet access for web, email and outside communications.
Telephone systems should also be connected using another, garages, Cat5e cable network which ensures systems are again routed back to, garages, a central point and then to the outside world.
Audio distribution, garages, from a central CD server to each room using digital cable running line level signals to, garages, local, garages, amplifier speakers will enable any one of 4 million channels to be selected: classical, garages, music for the parents, heavy rock to Kevin the Teenager and Steps to the Little Princess with good old Terry Wogan to the kitchen. Additionally it may be preferable to run the amplification centrally using a zone amplifier: this can then send the audio direct to the speakers at the desired destination.
Should you,, garages, garages, wish to distribute computer video signals this can be done using VGA cable, garages, which is bulky and expensive. However, connectivity may be better, garages, achieved using a Cat5e network which enables data and audio to be encoded and sent down a much thinner and cheaper cable to each destination point.
Fibre optics may be used but have serious cost implications and physically for, garages, multiple channels the cables have minimum bend radii which often are difficult to achieve, garages, in a domestic environment. The advantage is that future connectivity is assured, but will require third party trained personnel for set-up and maintenance thus adding to potential costs.
Wireless networks are feasible though despite claims to the contrary are not 100% secure so putting your security system or sensitive computer connection on a wireless connection may provide flexibility but does expose a weak link in the system which the determined could break into.
To provide maximum flexibility it is a good idea to run a cable from the central command point to each room where control is required for each of the following elements:- , garages, 1 x, garages, RG59/u for video - transmit 1 x, garages, RG59/u or 1 x Cat5e for video receive from security CCTV 1 x Cat5e for computer network 1 x cat5e for telephone, garages, (four lines possible per cable) 1 x cat5E as a control, garages, wire (increasingly, garages, this will become a common control protocol for, garages, lighting, heating and new equipment, garages, - fridges, cookers, washing machines will doubtless have PC chips within a few years, some already do) 1 x Cat5e, garages, for future expansion All cables to be bunched and sleeved enabling a single pull through at first fix Cables terminate in a recessed wall panel with the appropriate, garages, cable sockets. Cable runs to be pipe encased for future access. 1 x, garages, fish wire per run - separate to initial first fix bundle (enables future cables to be pulled through) In a two storey house cables are best run from ground floor to first floor and run through void between ground and first floor and then run up/ down walls to required points. Central command point should be located within the main fabric of the building this can be in a utility room, basement, a garage can be used but security may be an issue. With this infrastructure in place the system may then be added to and configured without limit to the number or type of devices used, providing the room in question does have a patch panel, garages, .

Save Money & Time... Plan Home Decorating Projects
Source: articleage.com
Why is planning home decorating projects important? Let's start by asking the following question.
What do the following, garages, have in common?
1) Boxes of odds & ends collecting dust in the basement
2) Bags of discarded curtains, bedspreads and pillows in the attic
3), garages, Half empty paint cans stacked against a wall in the garage
It could mean, garages, you have a hard time parting, garages, with anything, however, in this case all these, garages, point to decorating attempts gone astray.
Let me continue with a short story:
"The Discovery" Once upon a time there was a very cluttered basement. Over the years the occupants of the home had, garages, done nothing but toss things down there. When it finally became obvious that the only way to get from one side to the other was with the use of a road map, Mom decided it was time to clean house.
As she began going through the numerous boxes and after opening an infinite number of storage bags, she began to realize that one particular phrase was continually being repeated, "Why, garages, did I buy this". After what seemed like an eternity in the basement, she moved on to check other parts of the house.
What she discovered probably could have been used in a Steven King novel, the abandoned items in the basement has multiplied and had taken up residence in every out of the way, garages, space they could find. There were signs of them in all the closets, cupboards, under the beds even in the garage.
After giving it, garages, some thought, it became apparent that this, garages, was a case of Impulse Buying. Now don't worry there is a cure, it's called Planning, and it's really easy to learn.
Mom has since recovered from the dreaded impulse buying bug, has had a large tag sale and now before she goes out, garages,, garages, the door on any new decorating adventures, she arms herself with a Written Plan.
This family and their home now live happily ever after. "The End"...
Ok, this may have sounded silly, but I think you've gotten, garages, the idea. At one time or another we've all done this. Been out shopping,, garages, spot something and say "Oh, this is really cute" then without fail it come home with us.
But, nine times, garages, out of ten it ends up put away, garages, because it's either the wrong color, turns out, garages, there is no where to put it or it just doesn't go with anything.
This is why by taking the time to make a Written Plan, you'll save yourself time and money, garages, by not falling prey to the dreaded, garages, impulse buying bug.
Then,, garages, the happy ending at the conclusion of the story will be yours.
p.s. the facts in the story above are true and the Mom, well, that was me.

Source: ezinearticles.com
Like most parents, you probably have at least one or two of your child's old backpacks stuffed away in their closet, the garage, or many other possible, garages, places. Well, here is a way to give that unused and forgotten, garages, backpack a new lease on life, and help you get a little more organized without breaking the bank.
It is pretty obvious because of the weight of books that they carry, that most backpacks are well constructed with several zipper closed compartments. I decided, garages, to fill the larger section of the backpack with car jumper cables, and the smaller compartment with a First Aid Kit. As you may have already guessed, this bag is going in, garages, the trunk of the car when it is done.
To start, using some puffy fabric, garages, paint, label, garages, the different compartments by use on the front side of the backpack (for photos see below). Puffy paints are fun and easy to use, and something you may want to get your young children involved in. It is so simple, since all you have to do is to squeeze the paint out of the bottle right, garages, on to the fabric. For this project, we used bright purple and neon green colors. But any color of your, garages, choice would work just fine. Once the paint dries to a touch, the letters will have a cool puffy three dimensional look to them. Your recycled, garages, backpack is now ready for the car. Every time I now open the trunk and see the backpack, those childhood memories of my child come rushing, garages, back, and so will yours I am sure. Another way to recycle your childs used backpack would be to fill the larger section of the backpack, garages, with a couple of beach towels, a few books,, garages, or a pair of flip flops (sandals that is). Then, fill the smaller, garages, compartment, garages, with sun lotion, sun screen, and sun glasses. Go ahead, be creative. It is your backpack. The next time you get, garages, ready for a day in the sun, your recycled backpack will be ready to go. Keep it handy in the garage, garages, or in your car. Not only will this save you time, but you will have something cute and original that your kids can participate in designing.

Introduction to Collecting Elephants
Source: articleage.com
Introduction to Collecting Elephants There are, garages, many, garages, facets to
collecting anything, and elephants are no exception. For
example, there are some interesting myths and stories related to
collecting. The most common is that one should only collect
elephants with their trunk up, garages, - I don't personally believe it,
and some, garages, collectors actually do the opposite. A myth borne of
the Feng Shui craze is placing elephants near the entry of you
home, facing in certain, garages, directions. The lore and myths of
elephants and some aspects of collecting elephant-related things
are captured in: "An Enchantment of Elephants" by Emily
Gwathmey, and: "elephant, garages, ancient and modern" by F. C. Sillar and
R. M. Meyler, garages, . Why collect elephants, garages,, garages, in the first place? Well,
for me, they are cool looking animals, their
historical/ancestral forms are fascinating,(e.g., anacus,
mastodon, woolly, garages, mammoth etc.), and they have been put on more
things than any other, garages, animal I believe. So there, garages, is a huge
variety of things to collect. Just look at all, garages, the categories in
Section 3; most people can find more than one category that
interests them - independent of the elephant motif. So if you
combine the interests - you can find years of enjoyment
indulging those interests, garages, . Also, a good reason to announce your
interest in elephants is, when people know you collect
elephants, you start getting them as gifts! The Spousal
Acceptance, garages, Factor - managing your significant other. Whether you
are, garages, married or have a significant other, one thing is almost
inevitable: conflict over your, garages, ever-burgeoning collection.
Either in terms of size, amount of space taken in the home, or
the financial angle, the spousal acceptance factor plays a part
in your attempt to collect every cool elephant you see. As your
collection grows from the tens to the hundreds and then to the
thousands for some, you have to have somewhere to put them.
Depending on the size of your home, you first start out using
available/existing space: in the curio with the dinner plates,
on bookshelves along with Twain and Tolkien, and on what was,
ostensibly, plant shelves. Then you need a dedicated space -
because scattering them all over is messy and some are lonely
etc. So you either rearrange things to put them all on one set
of shelves or in one curio, or you go out and buy or make
dedicated curios or shelving. Then the ultimate - you convert a
room of your house, then your whole house, then buy or rent a
building to display the elephants. That is exactly what some
people do - as Mitch Brown did when she opened, garages, The Elephant
Castle and Museum in Las Vegas (now closed and looking for
another building). This scenario, garages, is fine if your significant
other accepts or better yet - joins you in, garages, your obsession. But
if your relationship is not on solid ground, yielding ever-more
space and funds to, garages, your hobby could make, garages, them become resentful
and angry. If they are not on board and amused and accepting of
your hobby, NEVER buy them an elephant gift for their birthday
or holiday! They will know for whom you really bought it! How
internet is changing collecting. Let's face it, the Internet has
changed just about everything, and collecting is no exception.
For me, I reached an elephant collector's epiphany of sorts,
when I first logged onto eBay and searched on the word:
"elephant". About 3,000 elephants came up for sale for one week!
Now, the number is about 10,000 per week - some being repeats of
course, garages,, garages, . The point being, a great variety of elephant
collectibles is available to collectors in an open market. It
would take me the rest of my life - if then - to travel to all
the places and shops, lets alone individuals, to see all those
elephants for sale. But on eBay they are all in one place. And
that is just eBay; there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of
other sites that, garages, have a goodly amount of elephanteria to look
at. What to collect - specialization If you have collected
elephants, garages, for long, you probably realize that there are a lot of
them out there!! Tens, if not hundreds of examples/instances, garages, in
each of the categories that are listed here, garages, . (There are
certainly some categories I did not include.) So, garages, that means
thousands of different basic types of elephants. That does not
even consider the lower-level variations in , for example, color
or size of a particular model. There are so many elephants, it
is doubtful that anyone could collect every one, even with
unlimited funds; no one can get every manufacturer or artist,
every material, in every color and variety and size. So what do
you do? Specialize! Some have decided that only elephant
figurines are elephant collectibles - and there are plenty of
those to go around! Some may like tobacco-related items and so
combine that with a love of elephant, garages, things, and collect
elephant ashtrays, humidors, dispensers, matchboxes, etc. You
can also divert an existing mainstream hobby like numismatics, garages, or
philately, to the elephant world, as there are plenty of
examples of elephants coins and stamps. Another option is to
collect elephants made on your birthday, or made during a
certain, garages,,, garages, garages, era (e.g., Art Deco), or by a particular manufacturer or
from a specific material. Or, be a "type" collector,, garages, wherein you
try and get at least one excellent, garages, example of an elephant in
each category. Another neat way to specialize is to collect 1
pachy from each place you visit. Or focus on elephants from the
place you grew up. For me - that would be Cleveland, Ohio, so
whenever there, garages, is an ellie that relates to Cleveland (or the
greater metro,, garages, garages, area), or Ohio, I try to pounce on it! Condition
In all areas of collecting, not just elephant collecting, one
factor is of utmost importance - condition! It cuts across all
categories of elephants - the better the condition,, garages, the rarer it
is (as compared to used and damaged versions of the same thing),
and the more it will appreciate, because other instances will
become used/damaged, garages, over time. Therefore, ultimately, if the
elephant is in the best possible condition, the more you will
pay, garages, for it. So,, garages, if you can afford it, buy mint or near, garages, mint
items with little damage. That is, unless you find an unusual
item or one so rare that affordability in any kind of future
time frame, garages, would be out of the question. Not only does buying
undamaged elephants pay off in case you ever sell, but your
peace of mind is important too. I mean, you don't what to look
through your collection and be reminded of that crack or chip or
tear every time, right?! Now, that being said, there is nothing
wrong with some normal wear (as opposed, garages, to 'tear'). For example,
if you buy a bronze that has been painted and is, say a true
antique (~100+ years old or so), it is safe to say it is OK for
there to be some minor paint problems - either small flakes or
chips, or a rubbing/dulling of gloss. But, garages, not too much!! Or, if
you buy an old magazine advertisement that has a minor margin
tear, garages, that will 'mat out'; that seems OK too. Especially if you
feel, garages, you will not get an opportunity to see/buy that, garages, exact, garages, item
again, and it really appeals to you otherwise.Of, garages, course you
could take a purist stance and only look for perfect specimens.
This is fine, garages, too, but keep in mind that it will take a lot
longer to find specimens in that shape,, garages, and will cost more,
likely, garages, much, garages, more for certain items. However, if you specialize
in, garages, elephant bronzes to the exclusion of all else, since your
focus is narrowed, you can afford to be picky. Your time and
money is focused and you want to get the finest possible
examples within, garages, a particular category of elephants. Things to be
wary, garages, of include: *ivory vs. bone vs. synthetic:, garages, how to tell: the
hot pin test - reference link: Ivory Test*Bakelite vs. other
plastics: how to tell: The Rub Test: Rub the Bakelite object in
question with a clean, dry finger until you feel heat being
generated. If you smell an odor like formaldehyde, the object is
Bakelite. The Hot Water Test:. Heat some water close to the
boiling point, and place a part of the object in the hot water
for a moment and remove; If you smell an odor like formaldehyde,
the object is Bakelite. The Hot Needle Test: Heat a needle, garages, to
red hot. Touch the needle for only a second to an, garages, inconspicuous
spot on the surface. If you smell an odor like formaldehyde, the
object is Bakelite., garages, Also, if the needle penetrates the surface
of the object, garages, easily, it is probably NOT Bakelite!.*post-ban
ivory imported into US *fake signatures on e.g., Lalique
*reproductions and re-introduced, garages, models/namesAs with all other
collectibles,, garages, your familiarity with the subject will help you
identify a reproduction from the real thing. Reading books, like
those referenced, garages, in Section 4, monitoring internet auction sites
like eBay, attending shows, flea markets and live auctions, and
talking to specialists and other collectors, all contribute to
your knowledge and expertise. Insurance Heaven forbid something
bad happens to your elephant collection. If you don't have them
stored away in a safe place - like, garages, Fort Knox, a bank's safety
deposit box, or an in-home vault (see Storage/Protection
subsection), if disaster struck, garages, you would want some way of
recouping the loss.If your, garages, elephant collection starts burgeoning
in, garages, terms of sheer numbers, cost/replacement value or just
sentimental value, you want to consider getting insurance to
cover them. Check with the insurance agent for the company that
covers your home; many times the coverage for personal
belongings, garages, is some percentage of the coverage for your house. So
if your house is covered for $100,000 say, and your personal
belonging coverage/content is, garages, covered for, garages, 30% of the value of
your house, then you are automatically covered for $30,000. Now,
assume your furniture, TV/VCR/etc., clothes and kitchen wares
etc., are worth 25,000, and your elephant collection is worth
$3,000 (or you paid that amount over the years), then, garages, you may be
covered to the extent you, garages, need to be. But, if in the same
situation,, garages, you paid $25,000 for your elephants over 20 years, or
they are currently valued at $25,000, you definitely want to add
an, garages, insurance rider to make up the difference in coverage Fixing
broken elephants, garages, Of course, the old adage: "an ounce of
prevention is worth a pound of cure." applies to elephant
collectibles as well. But the sad day inevitably comes when, by
moving an elephant in the home, or by shipping accident, or
other mishap, an elephant becomes damaged. Some collectors buy
damaged elephants and either fix them or leave them alone,
claiming it increases, garages, the charm or "character" of the find.
Others buy a damaged elephant if it is especially rare or if a
perfect one would be too expensive. One note of utmost
importance: it is not advisable to clean or otherwise repair
true antiques, unless a professional does it and you understand
the consequences. For some antiques, refinishing or repairing
certain, garages, flaws actually diminishes value, even though it may make
the elephant look better cosmetically, or restore a missing
part. Some dirt or dust can be removed on pottery,, garages, metal or wood
with nothing more than a damp cloth. The most common damage I
have seen is missing or broken tusks. For many types of
elephants - tusks can be repaired or replaced. Wood,, garages, plastic or
ivory tusks, garages, can, garages, be re-created with a little ingenuity and skill.
For example,, garages, a dowel rod of the appropriate length and diameter,
soaked in water or put in a steamer for a few hours, can be bent
into the appropriate curve and held there for several hours to
set the shape. Then further shaped with carving tools, can
produce a most-pleasing, garages,,, garages, garages, replacement wood tusk. Add paint or
stain to match the elephant or an existing tusk. Replacement
ivory can be carved from mammoth, garages, ivory (legal and available) to
replace tusks and toe-inserts or missing pieces on ivory
elephants. For common pottery elephants, breaks or cracks can be
repaired, garages, at home using common glue or epoxy cement. More
expensive elephants,, garages, garages, can be, garages, taken to repair shops that specialize
in such repairs. They usually re-break the piece, treat the
surfaces, re-glue and then the most important step -
re-glaze/fire the piece;, garages, the result is a repair than, garages, only
trained professionals with a microscope could tell. Highly
recommended for that favorite, expensive piece.Metal elephants
can be repaired by skilled metal-working artists. I have an old
brass elephant box that had missing tusks. I took it to an metal
artist who used brass rod to create and re-solder the tusks into
the holes. Natural aging should even out the patina. Brass,
bronze, aluminum, copper,, garages, and chrome elephants can be cleaned
and protected with the common, non-abrasive metal cleaners and
polishers, garages, . Rubin-Brite is a museum-quality cleaner/polisher, garages, that
leaves a carnuba-wax, garages, protective finish on the metal. Iron and
steel elephants can rust, which requires more work. A rust
remover jell, followed by, garages, 0000 steel wool cures most rust spots.
Again, for older, rare or true-antique metal elephants, unless
the corrosion is so advanced or bad that it further endangers
the elephant, leave minor discoloring and surface, garages, blemishes
alone.Ephemera - paper images, prints, posters and paintings -
can be repaired by professionals, if the item is pricey or rare,
and some repairs can be done by the home hobbyist. Pencil marks
on paper, garages, can be removed by gently rubbing with an eraser-like
material called "Magic-rub" by Sanford. A more thorough cleaning
can be gained using Lineco's Document Cleaning Powder. Paper
items can be deacidified using Bookkeeper Deacidification Spray.
Tears can be repaired using Lineco's transparent mending
tissue.Lastly, a great reference on caring for your elephants
